DAY 4: WE. LEARN.WE.STRIVE.

During the rehearsal in the morning, Mr Ong taught us to be more aware of our surroundings, do not subject ourselves towards horse blindness, do not be an inconvenience to others, and do not go in narrow minded.

Overall, the rehearsal was more productive.

Oh yeah, and Mr Ong gave us an analogy: In an airplane, be it passenger or pilot, both have to be seated and ready for the plane to take off. Similarly, everybody has to be ready to “take off” with Mr Ong ;)

Next up, Yodogawa technical high school exchange!

A mere 5 mins drive away from our hotel, we were welcomed with opened arms and affectionate smile by the Japanese students. Before the exchange even began, all of us were already impressed merely by their warm ups and tuning. Unsurprisingly, we were totally blown away by their performance! Especially the last piece, a medley of selected songs by The Carpenters. Their gimmicks, playing, music, EVERYTHING were just soooooo perfect!!! It was just like listening to some professional recording. We felt so intimidated :/ Indeed, they are not the top band in their prefecture for nothing! They were extremely enthusiastic, contagious, and at a totally new level from us, so high up there. The way they stand, the way they sit, all of their movements were sharp and really impressive. WE. NEED. TO. LEARN. FROM. THEM.

After their turn, we were up next, feeling all nervous and intimidated, yet so eager to put up our very best performance. True, the sudden change of plans threw us off our chairs. Saga Maligna was one of the pieces we were more prepared for. But oh well! Mr Ong told us, “U can’t reach their standard. Nothing you do today can. Does that make you more comfortable?”

The performance may not be great due to our anxiety, but at least we did the best we could.

The combined session was an eye-opener for us. The Sun Will Rise Again by Philip Sparke was composed in prayer for the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Under the baton of Mr Marutani, we believed that everybody had an enjoyable time. It was also the first time many of us played in such a huge band. It was totally a different experience! Perhaps it even changed our perspective towards band. Most importantly, we love it! It was really fun, even though it was just for a short period of time. We learnt to adapt to different conducting styles, to be ever prepared for anything and everything.

Memories of Friendship was conducted by our very own conductor, Mr Wilson Ong. Their focus was there even though they already had such a long practice (9AM – 9PM). We’ve got so much more to learn, seriously!

Reflecting back on today’s session, we certainly find a need for more focus during band practice. As our practice hours are much shorter, there should be no excuse that we cannot do so too. The amount of confidence exhibited by them should also be a learning point for us all. Individual confidence should not an obstacle for us to express ourselves musically, but instead, serve as a propellant for everyone to perform better. Music aside, the Japanese spirit of excellence should be one that everyone emulates. The Japanese strive to achieve their best in any aspect they involve themselves in. We believe that even though change cannot occur overnight, our intentions and actions towards excellence will surely bring about fruits of labor. Thus, we believe it is imperative that we adopt a forward-looking and positive outlook towards all future band practices.

Definitely, we came back not only as a better musician, but also a better person.

Finally going home

We are finally going home!

We left the hotel early for the flight. Some of us slept little and some didn’t even sleep at all.

We checked in and everything went smoothly, there’s no delay of flight also. After settling down at the waiting room, there’s extra time for us to walk and shop around the airport. Many of us did some last minute shopping before boarding the plane.

Next we transited at Hong Kong and this time we were early! Most of us went to grab some food before boarding the plane back to Singapore.

The plane touched down Singapore at around 8.30am. After collecting our luggage and instrument we board the chartered bus back to school and we had debrief in school before going home.

This isn’t the end of the journey, just the beginning. The start of us as a better person. After removing our horse-blinders, we learnt to become more aware of our surroundings, to be considerate, and most importantly to take every chance as a new learning experience. Despite how bad circumstances are, there are always different ways to reading it, and the best way would be to learn from it. We hope that this trip has been of a great learning experience to all. For those who were unable to go for the trip, we do hope that whatever that we have learnt and brought back to Singapore, would be able to influence and change them too.

Day 5 in Kyoto: Toba and Heian High School Exchange

We‘re going to Kyoto today! Kyoto is an hour away from Osaka. By this time on our trip in Osaka in Japan, the weather has already become colder and our teachers told us that Kyoto is even colder. So we suited up our thermal wear in the bus and slept in the bus. On our way there, the glass of the bus froze up and we could barely see through the glass. Finally after an hour, we have arrived at Yasaka Shrine.

Yasaka Shrine was first built in 656 AD. It was dedicated to Susa-no-o, the god of prosperity and good health, and his wife and 8 children. It was a very beautiful temple. After walking through the temple, we went to the Gion town which was one of kyoto’s famous geisha district. Many of us tried to spot a geisha but only some of us saw the geisha in a taxi. The Geisha was probably going to the host house to perform. We were given awhile to shop here. After that is done, we went to the Kiyomizu Temple.

After the sightseeing in the temple, we had lunch at Baizan do, a steamboat like lunch.

After that satisfying meal, we finally head for the band exchange with Heian and Toba high school at Heian itself.

When we arrived at Heian, we headed for the hall to tune up and get ready. They had ushers to guide us around the school. We were the first band to perform. But before that, one of the Heian students read out a message in English to address their welcome to this exchange and similarly we had Irfan to do the same for Heian and Toba. Then, we finally started. We gave all our best into that performance and the students clapped happily along to our pop piece love-ing. After that, Heian and Toba performed. They performed 2 songs. Both of which was very impressive. The second song was a Japanese folk song and they had the chorus group to sing it and coupled with some gimmicks. The performance was very pleasant to watch. Soon after that, we had interaction time with the Heian and Toba students. We were grouped according to our sections. Most of us started off by introducing our names and some of us felt that we did not know what to do, but after awhile i think we have warmed up to them. Many of us presented our gifts to them and some of us even exchanged games with them. We asked them for a Japenese game then we teached them our very own game. I think that they had been a very good host to us as their attitude towards us without fail was really nice and they were very polite.

After we took our last few pictures, we had to head back for our hotel already. Many of us exchanged contacts with them. We waved to them as we rode on the bus and slept on our way back to the hotel.

Free and Easy Day 4 in Osaka

Today is the free and easy day of the trip. Everyone woke up early and had their breakfast like the previous days. We started off the day by walking towards the Moriguchi station.

Most of the locals have to get off their bike and walk to get pass us. Felt bad for blocking the path of the locals there. After we have gotten the tickets, we made our way through the gates. We were required to insert the ticket into the machine and have to collect it at the other end of the gate. There wasn’t any significant sign as to where the ticket will pop out again. Many of us stood at the gate for some time trying to find the ticket. After everyone got through the gate, we made our way to our 1st destination, Dobutsuen-mae station. This means 'in front of the zoo' in English.

In order to get to the station, we have to transit at 2 different stations. Although we were kind of told to keep quiet in the trains, we were making noises in the train. There were also a few that were taking pictures in the trains.

After around 10 to 20mins of train ride, we reached the dobutsuen-mae station.

We made our way to the zoo. Most of us took many pictures in front of the zoo before making our way in. We made our way to the savannah section where animals like lions, zebras, giraffe and etc are in. Most of the time the animals had their butts facing us. We saw different variety of animals from small ones like birds to big animals like lions, jaguar and tigers. We spend around 1hour at the place. Although it was a short time and we did not have enough time to see all the animals, we enjoyed the experience at the zoo.

After visiting the zoo, we were told to settle our lunch before gathering back at the entrance of the zoo.We went to get some takoyaki at the street right in front of the zoo called Shinsekai.

All of us have not gotten any takoyaki since the day we reached Japan.

Everyone was excited when we knew that there was a takoyaki shop in the street.

Almost all of us bought a box of takoyaki. Most of us got sick of the takoyaki after finishing a box of it. After we gathered back at the entrance of the zoo, we made our way back to the subway station to proceed to our next destination, Tenjinbashisuji-6 station.

We went to the museum which is on top of the station.

In the museum, we were able to experience Japan in the olden days. We were allowed into a room with buildings build to resemble those of the olden Japan. There is an area where visitors can dress up in the traditional Japanese costumes. Some of us dressed up in the traditional Japanese costumes and took pictures as we walk around the area.

After visiting the museum, we went to a shopping district near the nipponbashi station. There is a big electronic shop in the area. The place is flooded with people walking from different directions.After reaching deciding where to gather later, we set off in different groups again. There were many shops in the area and a lot of us bought many things there.

After shopping, we were told that we could enjoy the beautiful festive decorations along the road.

The sun was down and the wind was blowing.

The road was filled with many people from different parts of Japan, all wanting to see the decorations in the area. Police and barricades were deployed in the area to control the crowd. Once we were given time to walk around by ourselves, we started to tour the place. Not before long, all of us met up again and decided to find a place that we could be sheltered and not face the chilly wind. We decided to hide in the subway station nearby.

We counted the strength of the people present and had to find the other members before we could gather back at the place. We spent around 10 to 15 mins in the subway before we start to move to the meeting place. On our way to the meeting place, everyone was rushing as the wind is blowing at us. We immediately head back to the hotel through to our hotel.

On our way back, it was during the peak hour. Most of the adults were all wanting to get back home through the subway. There were so many people that some of us had to squeeze into the 2nd train to get to another area. It was so packed that there is no effort needed to get out. Everyone else was pushing and we got out easily. After we got back to moriguchi station and to our hotel, we had our dinner and prepared for the next day.

OGENKI DESUKA! DAY 3 20 Dec 2011

After a scrumptious breakfast, we started our day to the Universal Studio Japan (USJ) in Osaka.

The moment we entered USJ, we made a beeline for the entrance. Upon reaching the entrance, we spent some time taking photos for memories. We were so excited that we forgot about the chilly weather!

Once we entered USJ, everyone made a dash for the rides because there were many thrilling rides waiting ahead us!

One of the thrilling rides that were there was Hollywood Dream- The Ride. It was the largest rollercoaster ride in USJ! The first drop of the ride was the steepest and the most heart stopping moment! The unique part of this ride was that we are treated to tracks of different genre.

The other thrilling ride was Space Fantasy- The Ride. It was based on a Solar Shuttle to journey through the wonders of the Solar System on a mission to save the Sun. Since its an indoor rollercoaster, we would never knew what will happen next.

And of course, the most epic ride of all, The Snoopy’s Great Race. Great? Well, guess what? The ride is meant for kids! Mr Ong and Wei Shan actually squeezed into one carrier which is meant for two kids. Although this ride is meant for kids, it was still exciting and fun.

We were also pleasantly surprised and entertained to see the Christmas parade. We felt extremely privileged to witness this event as it is a special event to celebrate their 10^thanniversary. It was magical and we even had the opportunity to take picture with the Santas and elves.

Last but not least, the day ended with some shopping for souvenirs for family and friends.

Ohayo Gozaimasu! Day 2- 19 DEC 2011

Our Japanese lesson before the trip really helps us a lot! Thanks Akiko! Arigato-gozimasu!

After a long grueling 5-hour flight, we finally reached Kansai International Airport in Osaka. Despite that, we summoned up the strength to begin our first day in Osaka. With the help of our guide, Fuuji-san, and our helpful driver, Natsu-san, we headed to our first destination, The Osaka Museum Of History, which is right next to the Osaka Castle! The morning was very chilly, but we still enjoyed the morning scenery there.

We had a better understanding of the history of Osaka from the museum trip. We started from the 10th floor and descended floor by floor to find the stamps as part of our learning journey.

Next we moved on to the majestic Osaka Castle. There are many artifacts at the Castle that enhanced our knowledge of the history and culture of Osaka. We saw a very beautiful bird's eye view of the castle grounds from the top of the castle.

Next we went to have lunch at a local restaurant at the Osaka Castle. We had a very satisfying lunch - Udon and hotpot!! After lunch, we saw the filming of The Amazing Race right before our very eyes. A few teams with camera crews ran past us in search of their next destination. Similarly, we ourselves starting heading towards our next destination: the Shinsaibashi, a popular shopping district in Osaka. We had an awesome time there and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

At the later part of the day, we went for dinner at the hotel restaurant. Ittadakimasu! We had spaghetti and rice with curry and it was delicious ! :D

After dinner, we headed to the Moriguchi Culture Hall for a full band rehearsal. It was very productive and motivated us to do well during our actual exchange with Yodogawa High School and Heian and Toba High School!

After the rehearsal came a surprise! We pretended that everything was normal and bought a cake to celebrate Jasmine's 18th birthday at the Moriguchi Culture Hall. Happy 18th Birthday Jasmine!

Jasmine was pleasantly surprised and impressed us all by blowing out all 18 candles in 1 breath!

Tomorrow, we would be going to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka ! Do look forward to our next post ! :D Oyasumi-nasai !

DAY 1 IN OSAKA

We were very excited about the trip to Japan.!!!! We gathered in school at 1.30pm with our luggage. :) hmm.. The bus came and we loaded our instrument and luggages. VERY TIRING. :/ On our way to the airport, there was a road accident that did not involve us. :X When we reached the airport, we unloaded the instruments.

While we were checking in our luggages and instruments, we got news that our flight to HONG KONG had been DELAYED BY 2 HOURS!

We decided to have our dinner in Changi Airport instead of having it in the plane. :O So we have to spend some extra EXTRA money :S and sad to say some of us did not bring along SGD. $.$ YADA.YADA.. AFTER a long wait, we boarded the plane after a delay of 3 hours instead of 2. Our dinner on plane became our supper. :( We reached hongkong airport at 1.15am and had to rush to catch our next flight departing at 1.35am. WE RAN LIKE CRAZYZXCZCZXCZXC. O.o and some of them almost went to the wrong gate. Luckily none of us were lost during the transit. Most of us did not had much sleep in the plane. =( We still managed to reach our destination, KANSAI AIRPORT, at the estimated time and the schedule was not delayed. After washing up in the airport, we prepared ourselves for DAY 2..

HI AGN!!! During this study period, many of us may feel demoralized by the amount of work that sometimes we even lose track of. Perhaps some of us will be unable to finish our assignments in time, unable to understand the topics, or even unable to set into the mood to do work. However still, we need to tell ourselves: I MUST PRESS ON!
Just lyk even if u're making subnormal profit, if average revenue(AR) = average variable cost(AVC), u need to continue production and most importantly, HOPE FOR A BETTER DAY! So even if u cant understand a thing, u do your best to understand it. Help is always just a request away :D err, pardon me, for those who don take econs.
Therefore, even if hopes are low, it doesn't mean it's gone. Grab it, cherish it, and hold on tightly to it. When the time comes, the harvest will be plentiful :)
If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes!

By the way, Mr Ong left us 2 words and an analogy of the Sg's GE2011 just days before SYF.

Intrinsic Motivation and the opposition parties.

Intrinsic Motivation: We can motivated doing what we like and enjoy. We do what we must. And we're never pressured by external pressures. Like in band, we stay and continue learning, playing/making music because we like music and we end up enjoying doing them. Even though band may be stressful because we always get scolded for our wrong rhythm and awful intonation, this intrinsic motivation in us pushes us to put in more effort in practising, playing at our 100% effort. Results don't really matter as long as we've put in our best and enjoyed it.

So dear band, this 2 words does not apply to us only during SYF preparation, it can help us in whatever that we do in the future, be it continuing learning/playing music, or studying. Instead of wanting to get good grades for anything, try liking it and develop the interests for it to keep you moving on and not wanting to give up :)

We are just like the opposition parties: We are small, we are alone, we do not have many support from others, we are strong-willed. Even though we are a small band as compared to the other school bands, as long as we believe that we're able to do it, we put in our best efforts. We may not have the most supportive people supporting us, but as long as we stay united and not give up, we can all do well without it. Sometimes, it's impossible to win, but as long as we promise to do our best and have the support from people, everything we do is all worthwhile

Small band doesn't mean small sounds. We can prove to the others that this stereotype is wrong. We can produce big sounds, have great ambitions like other great bands too. We don't have to care how people think about us, what really matters to us is that we enjoy each other's company and support. :)

Dear JJCSB,

this silver that we've gotten. would be the proudest silver to many of us in our 1~8 years of being in band. Comparing this year's SYF results, the standard for SYF has been raised and judging this year is relatively strict, we still maintained our medal, which is quite a good feat! :)

Band no. 21, the last band of all JCs, we put up an impressive performance, brought good music to our audiences and enjoyed this experience together as a band on stage.

To all the J2s, I've seen your batch and the band grew from a small band with many selfish individuals to one that dares to dream, united and many of you had grown to become a true band member who thinks in unison today. You guys made me vvv proud of all of you :') Remember this memories of friendship made in this 1.5 year :')

and now, We have all stepped down from our posts in band, please study hard for your Alevels, like how you've practiced hard for SYF2011. Miss Lim hopes that we'll all do well for As and make the band, yourself and everyone supporting you proud. All the best to us! :D

& to the J1s, same thing applies. Start studying hard for all your tests and make Miss Lim, Mr Ong, Your Seniors, Everybody proud. :D

Sound Check on 30th May

Dear band,

We all had a loooong day in school from 725 onwards to around 230 in the afternoon. And i appreciate that you guys did not complain about being tired at all. :)

Firstly, i was rather disappointed by a few of you by your irresponsible behaviour and attitude. Rules have been set and there are still a handful of you who choose to not follow the rules laid out and think that you're still right. To those who were(or are still) guilty of being late today for whatever-not reasons, Mr Ong had even further emphasised that Rest is important and to go back home straight after talentime so that you will not tire yourself during the sound check the next morning. It was really very very disappointing to see all of you sleeping and i have to wake each and everyone of you during the sound check. Your little actions depicts the attitude of our band. Sleeping during the sound check(esp when other bands are playing), simply shows that we are a rude band with no basic courtesy.

Would you want your audiences to sleep, play w their phones or talk when we were performing? If you don't want people to do these to you, please think of the other performers and not do the same thing to them. This is what we, as a band, have to work on to improve...

Anyway, something happy :)

Despite the tiredness growing in many of you, you guys managed to stay focused throughout the whole rehearsal and today was the best that we've performed so far. :) Continue doing what you've done today for all of the remaining few practices left :)

Band practices can be very tiring and exhaustive, so please use the weekends and the public holidays to get plenty of rest so you'll not fall sick. :) Take lots of rest/vitamin pills and release your full potential on 4th may :)

Remember, do what we can have control in...

100% focus and concentration is what Mr Ong needs in each and everyone of us. Like what he had said before, "It just take 1 person in the band not being focused to affect our sound and expression". Do you want to be that 1 person in the band who caused the band to sound Off and bad or do you want to be the other 47 people giving in their 100% effort? To regret or to rejoice after the performance, it's all your choice....

I guess most of you are resting now at this hour (2:53am) lol

Concentration...

Rehearsal today wasn't as productive as the past few days because many were not around due to JJTalentime. Since Talentime is over and there will not be any more school events clashing with our not-so-many band practices left, I really hope you guys will place Band as your top priority for these remaining 4days.

Just these 4 days and you'll be 'free' from band and who knows, you'll be suffering from "band withdrawal syndrome" after that huh?

Treat each rehearsal like it's the last and give in your 100% attention, focus, concentration when playing. Switch on your brains and your common sense so that time will not be wasted away going through the same things that we've done before. Tomorrow (or later) will be our second and LAST Sound check before SYF.

Recall what have been thoroughly gone through over and over again for the past 1-2months. Do what is necessary to sound better. Mr Ong has already told us how our phrasing will affect our music expression, and it's all up to us whether we want to play our 2 emo songs expressively or R2D2-ish.

Anyway, a tip or two before every performance.
Don't be nervous
Stay focus and concentrated; try not to talk (too much) because Talk More = Miss More
Blow warm air into your instruments while reading your scores

Hello Band,

time really flies right? we're all left with just 5 days to work on our musicality, our expression and to really 'let go' when we play..

Mr Ong said, it's best if we 'let go' as we play so we'll be able to express ourselves better. Now is not the time to work on our notes, our rhythm, our running notes or anything fundamental. Spend more time working on the parts that we really, really know of & work it to perfection.

Recall: Practice makes Permanent

Keep practicing and perform your best.

Remember, every rehearsal now is different; we will keep getting better if we set our minds to do it.

Hello JJCSB,

We've just had our 1st and probably our last music exchange today.

So, what do you think of our performance?

I can say, we did OK but it wasn't our best performance thus far..

Every halls that we go to, project their sound differently. Like what Mr Ong has said,

"Do not trust what we hear, trust ONLY what we see"

Looking up at him when we play allow Mr Ong to communicate with us & guide us through how our expression should be. Looking up at him also give both the conductor and the player confidence in playing. So band,

Have the Trust in Mr Ong!

& Remember the exact feeling when we played at our best, listened to one another? We did it before and we CAN do it again for every rehearsal/performance that we have.

We Should, We Must, We Can, We Will.

Whatever that have been gone through, we should remember and jot it down, we must not forget, we can all do it and we will all play well. These 4 little phrases may seem simple, but if all of us have the same mentality and mindset, we WILL all do well and be proud of ourselves.

So now band, 10 more days to SYF. It is all up to each and everyone of you to make use of this remaining time left to work out on your parts. 10 days may seem little but if we're gonna use these 10 days well & not let it go to waste, 10 days IS a lot of time left.

Come on JJCSB, do not give up at this point in time. We have come sooooo far together as a band and we'll finish this period together, with pride & glory.

Last night at Taiwan ):

Hi dear readers!
Today's post will be about our final day in Taiwan, the end of JJCSB's first ever overseas trip. After our breakfast at the hotel, we set-off to visit Anping Tree House, an architecture whose lng history has allowed it to become one with nature, with trees growing inside it and roots covering its walls. Our bandmate certainly had a wonderful time photo-taking in such a scenic location.

Next up, we visited the Ten Drum Cultural Village, originally an abondaoned sugar factory. However, with their member's creativity and determination, they have successfully converted the factory, producing one indoor concert hall, one outdoor concert platform, workshops to produce drums, classrooms for drum lessons, and even a temple dedicated to their God of Drums!

Always dedicated to showcase the ancient art of chinese drums, our guide held basic drum lessons with us. Naturally, we did well, much to the guide's pleasant surprise. Of course, the visit wouldn't be complete without a performance by the members looking at their breathtaking display of virtuosity at the chinese drums. I'm sure that they have definitely motivated us to work even harder and to strive for greater heights in our own playing.

After our lunch, at the village, we prepared ourselves for the long journey back to Taipei. Although the journey might be tiring, nevertheless, we were all excited to do some last minute shopping at another Taipei Night Market.

It was a mad rush to buy everything and anything, to bring back a little part of Taiwan to remind us of the wonderful time we spent there.

Although we definitely do not want the shopping to nd, it was still inevitable that we would hve to go back to the hotel. Now, we are all back at our hotel rooms, enjoying our last night in Taiwan.

Taiwan - Day Two

Today we woke up early to take a bus down to Tainan for the music exchange with National Nanke Int’l Experimental High School. After an arduous and torturous 4-hour bus ride (where everyone slept), we first visited the ZhengChengGong & WunChang Place, after which we had Hakka food for lunch. The food was healthy but neutralized by the KouRouBao aka Fatty Pork Bun. We learnt that the food is good for our blood circulation, eye vision, aids digestive system and improves metabolism rate.

After lunch, we took a bus ride to the school and prepared for our music exchange. We were happy and pleasantly surprised when the students gave us a cordial welcome. We went up stage to have a quick sound check before the start of the actual performance.

Performance-wise, we felt that many of us could have done better. And due to unexpected circumstances, we had little time to spend interacting with the students. Somehow, we were dismayed by the fact that we couldn’t do much with the students.

Still, amid the gloom and doom, Ms Lim reminded us to count our blessings in this trip, by the fact that this is the FIRST time the JJ band could travel overseas for a real public performance, by the fact that the hosting school accepted our sudden request for an exchange, by the fact that we even managed to travel to not just any ASEAN country but Taiwan. And while our exchange with the students was extremely short-lived to the point that we could only exchange our e-mails for Facebooking, Ms Lim wants us to remember that we have to be thankful that we been given this opportunity, to look at the perfection in our imperfections.

Mr Ong further augmented Ms Lim’s reminder by teaching us three words:
1) Intrinsic Motivation – ‘Motivated for the sake of being motivated’; we practise our instruments because we must (seniors recall : We Should, We Must, We Can, We Will).
2) Altruism – Doing good without expecting anything in return.

We were also reminded of the bonds we have forged since we set foot in Taiwan, bonds we forged playing games we could have played in Singapore, but in a sense needed to come to Taiwan to forge them, and thus this trip has been a rewarding one.

Bidding farewell to the students there, we headed for Tainan Wei-Yet Toong Mao Grand Hotel to have our dinner and stay for the night. We had funky fish, salty soup, diluted tea, many mian, glutinous rice and sotong balls, though the best of the dishes was The Coffin Board.

Taiwan - Day one!

Today was an awesome day with a full day cultural tour around Taipei ~

The morning breakfast buffet was scrumptious with ham, hard-boiled eggs and curry & rice :)

On our way for cultural tour =)

Have more vitamins, take care of your health people!!

We set off to Tamshui Historic Street and the best part was... ICE-CREAM!

Seems like the one who enjoyed it the most is Jinyang!

During lunchtime, we gave NuanQi a birthday surprise! HAPPY BIRTHDAY NUANQI! ^^

Then we headed to the National Palace Musuem. The tour guide, Sunny is really knowledgeable and fed us with lots of historical facts and we are really appreciative of it, ;)

We also visited the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall.

The part that we were looking forward to finally came... XI MEN DING!

It is really like Singapore Orchard Road and is very very crowded!!

The second highlight of the day finally came - Shilin Night Market! It is totally like Singapore Bugis. There were lots of cheap and good deals around and we really look forward to tomorrow's music exchange and performance :)

Anyways, all of us had intense band practice this whole week and it's obvious that our parts are slowly falling nicely together, so good job guys! :) But do also remember to not forget what Mr Ong expects/ had gone through before.

Good job to all of us! The concert was goood ;)

We have put in a relatively amount of effort for this concert for the past weeks. now i guess we just have to spend more time studying for our Promotional Exams since all CCAs are suspended till then :(

But it's okay! because we'll still be occupied with band rightt?. hehee. which is to memorise our 60scales before the next practice after Promos. Mr Lim will be testing us 1 by 1 on the scales randomly, so be very prepared !

The 60 scales are namely:
all 12 Major Scales,
all 12 Melodic Minor Scales,
all 12 Harmonic Minor Scales,
all 12 Major Arpeggio Scales,
all 12 Minor Arpeggio Scales and
all 12 Chromatic Scales

& you know like what Mr Lim had said before.

The only way for us to improve is to really start working on our scales first before doing anything.

We've all got a goal to work towards to, i.e. to have an overseas experiential trip. We wouldn't want a chance to go away right? so, let's all start motivating each other to work harder by memorising our 60+12 scales first k? :) but also, not neglecting our studies as well.

Best of luck to alll of us, and let's all wish the J2s all the best for their Prelims and A-levels Examinations :) hehee.

Goood job during the NDP in school on the 6th of August~

Everything on that day was on our side. hehee. because it was an awesome day to begin with! :)

The weather was awesome, everything went on well hoho. ^^ and most importantly, the band and the performance were awesome ;) (heheh. i think we did make an impression after all) But we've gotta thank our seniors for helping out, taking time to self-practice the parade marches at home and joining us in performing during that day. hehee.

We have put in a lot of effort these past weeks, and so now (I guess) it's time to re-direct some of our efforts back to school work.
NB : I said 'some'. I know nothing can stop you from thinking about Band :P

Oh, and for those who are curious, NB is the abbreviated form of 'nota bene', which means 'observe carefully' in Latin.

To those who feel that you could have done much better, please do not lose heart. There is a saying, "The journey is more important than the destination". It is true. While it may seem that results are all that is important, please bear this in mind : It is never the result which changes you, but the process in which you achieve that result. The world will never know the challenges you encountered, the hardships faced, the sacrifices made, the amount of effort put in, and most importantly, how you coped. But you do, and to me, it's all that matters.

To quote Mr. Lim, "When one phrase ends, another begins" (I believe he was talking about Hymn).
Granted, the quote's taken out of context, but J1s, it's your time. The J2s have stepped down.

Some words to jolt your memory :

Play with common sense (hais... NOWHERE else will this ever make sense)

Phrasing (esp. long ones)

The above list is, unfortunately, non-exhaustive, and is in addition to having all the correct notes, tone, good intonation, being in time, and looking at Mr. Lim before you start playing.

Also, some gentle reminders :

Before Enemy God and Starlight, watch Jia Wei (from Flute) for cue to stand

Between pieces, please do not talk. Use the time to scan through your score, to refresh your memory and prepare yourself for what needs to be done.
Optional : Similarly, I refrain from talking before a concert begins (maybe half an hour before or so) to do a mental run-through of the entire concert, focusing on things like who I need to listen out for, what kind of emotions I want to portray/evoke, what kind of emotions Mr. Lim wants us to portray/evoke, how he goes about doing that (tempo changes, phrasing, articulation etc.), and where these things happen.

For Castles (and So-ran Bushi *crosses fingers*), when it's time to shout, shout! It's part of the performance, so don't need to shy; it's probably just as important as playing in time, in tune, in tone, in style. Hey, if it helps, think of it as a note, and 'play' it loud

The acoustics at NAFA LFT will be very different from that in our Bandroom and in the Hall, so please watch Mr. Lim for directions how to make your sound sound better

Look at the countdown. Less than 12 hours to concert!
Please do not let all the hard work we've put in over the past weeks go to waste.
Make this concert just as enjoyable for your audience as it is for you, if not more.

As you can see, we've got a lot of work to do.
J1s who are new to their instruments, you'll be joining us for the first two songs, so please work hard.

As you already know, Band practices will end at 10pm starting this week.
I believe it shows that Mr. Lim is willing to put in some extra effort into preparing us for our concert.
And so, we should do the same.
J2s should remember Mr. Lim saying that when he comes, he doesn't expect to solve individual problems. Which mean notes and rhythm are our responsiblity to solve, so if you don't know or are unsure, ask.

To learn and ~~hopefully~~ perfect 10+ songs in around 20 practices is no easy feat. Coupled with homework and tests, it becomes even harder. But for us to enjoy our concert, and for our audience to enjoy our concert, we need to put in the extra effort.
And together, we shall make our concert a success.

Today was the banner painting day!
Despite the limited time given, we managed to
paint two banners, which was quite a feat indeed.

This would not have been possible without the
~~sacrifices~~ HUGE SACRIFICES made by our various
band members.
A big thank you to all those who came down to help,
of which includes the following people:
Annabel, Amabel, Cheah Hee, Kong Yong, Leslie,

Camp Reverie is over!

Despite a rough Day 1, we still kept our spirits up and made the best of the rest of the camp!

Dear all,
No one can disagree that schoolwork is starting to pile up on us and it feels as if we have less and less time for other matters. But if we see our life in a different manner, we can actually still afford to do many tasks. Just to remind you, I can assure that what we do every Tuesday and Thursday evenings has an irreplaceable and positive meaning which enriches our lives for a long time to come.

If we were to recall back, it is not just about playing music and non-stop practices each time. We are not only improving our musical skills and talents, but we are also learning on how to persevere on our given tasks, how to be self-disciplined
and especially important, to think of others before you act. These are important gems that we always polish, gems of our character that would hold us in character for the many years to come. While it is implicit growth within us, we should be glad that we are in good companies and environments. Such a chance ought to be treasured. Who knows what life has in hold for us.

Apart from all that, just remember how fascinated people are about you when you mention your musical ability. It is really something to be proud of, definitely. Doubly for those taking new instruments!

Okay this is long over due!(I know) Was cleaning up my com, and found this!

Happy times!

Its been great playing with you guys!
From playing Do Re Mi to Prince of Egypt to Carmen, ah.. Such good times.
I can still vividly remember the June practices, having sectionals in the evening. Just watching the sky slowly turn dark, while practising Sound of Music, that itself was already such a priceless memory.

Then there was the CC performance, which I choked on McDonald's chilli, err and that super-grandma's-time chinese love song 月亮代表我的心(see i know my chinese!!!!)

Then there was the camp which was tremendous amount of fun, despite me eating snakes here and there. Hah!

And then all the preparations up to until SYF, which I'm sure you already know how much fun it is. I wouldn't want to bore you with the details!

It has really been a fun and memorable 1 year term.
Hope JJCSB stays this way for years to come!
I guess thats about it!

Hello! Since someone wants posts about the band camp, let me do the posting...

WHO TOOK THE SAUSAGE FROM THE CANTEEN FRIDGE AND COOKED IT HUHHHHHH!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
End up with so much extra sausages at the end of breakfast. I think. -.-
So have to replace them and apologize to the aunty, and they are particular about the brand too.

God killed Mozart because he didn't want Salieri to get credit for what he didn't do. Salieri was going to kill Mozart, after he finished writing "Requiem", then take credit for writing Requiem so he could bask in Mozart's glory.
So, Salieri says he was kept alive to be tortured and so he could never be as good as Mozart, and watch his music be forgotten, while Mozart's was remembered. So he says he is the "Patron Saint of Mediocrity". He "absolves" the modiocres of their mediocrity, and wrongdoing.

Franz Liszt
Schubert,
and Mozart's son.
